RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE WIREMOLD COMPANYThe Wiremold Company is a reputable manufacturer of cable management systems. It published a very interesting white paper titled "How EFT disturbances affect Ethernet and Fast Ethernet Performance in Multichannel Plastic Raceway". The white paper describes the test setup when UTP communications cabling is placed parallel to power lines in adjoining compartments of surface mounted raceways and is subject to Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) disturbances. EFT disturbances are generated during a make or break of an electrical contact, and the fast changes of currents in office equipment. The tested applications included Ethernet 10 Mbps running on Category 3 cabling and Fast Ethernet 100 Mbps running on Category 5 cabling. The conclusion of this test was as follows: "The test results illustrate that Category 3 and Category 5 cables located in a non-metallic raceway in an adjacent compartment and in close proximity to the power cables provide satisfactory Ethernet and Fast Ethernet performance in the presence of EFT voltages from typical office disturbers" For further information, contact the Wiremold Company at http://www.wiremold.com
