 shielded cat5e termination
Can some one please tel me the specs on terminating Cat5e data cable. I will be terminating both ends on Leviton Cat5e inserts, one end is in telco closet, other at users desk. Is it correct only terminating one end of the drain (shield)? Also what do I connect the drain to? Thank you, MJ

Dear MJ,

While it is unusual to use shielded cable with unshielded jacks, it can be done.

First, here is a link to a PDF file on termination category 5 jacks from Leviton:

Typically you would only connect the shield one end (telco closet) when using shielded cable with non-shielded jacks. Connect the drain wire of the shield to a good earth ground in the rack, extending the wire is needed.

Sincerely,
