how many pair and what gauge is cat 6?

Dear Theresa,

CAT6 has the same number of pairs - four, same color code and same gauge (conductor diameter) as CAT5E. The manufacturers tend to increase the CAT6 conductor diameter slightly to fight attenuation, but it's still considered 24AWG.
