Question by Michelle Roth posted 28 May 2000
WHat type of cabling is used to run a token ring and what type is used to connect the PCs to the ring and the ring to the internet?
Answer by Dmitri Abaimov posted 29 May 2000
Dear Michelle,
The modern Token Ring implementation assumes twisted pair (UTP) CAT5 cabling as the base for the physical network infrastructure. Besides, the network itself looks like a star, since the Multistation Access Unit (MAU) connects devices to the ring, and its functionality resembles Ethernet hub for some extent.

To connect the ring itself to anywhere, including Internet, there should be bridge/router device used. This is to connect Token Ring network to the network with different protocol.

With best regards,
Dmitri Abaimov, RCDD
