When terminating a bank of patch panels should I start from the bottom and work my way up and also when terminating a panel should I start from left to right or right to left.

Dear Anthony,

I would suggest that you follow the manufacturer's installation instruction that most likely is included in the patch panel package. Usually ports are counted from right to left since when you look at the panel from the front, your first ports will be on your left. However, the individual pairs on the termination blocks may go from left as well as from right, depending on the manufacturer. If no instruction is available, just follow the color code - blue pair first, orange - second, green - third, brown - fourth.
Try to avoid untwisting the conductors in pairs as much as possible.

Sincerely,
Dmitri Abaimov, RCDD
