Dear Ron,

Please make sure you're extending Serial printer connection since for the parallel cable there are just not enough conductors in four-pair cable.

If you're extending a serial cable, the confusing thing is that there is no standard pin layout at RJ45 end. In fact, whatever colors you'll use, you'll be right as far as both ends are done with the same colors. Note: if that's not a null-modem cable

As a reference, you can take a pin layout of Avaya 355-type adapter which is successfully used for maybe 20 years by now:
Modular
jack
Signal

DB25

1 RI 22
2 DCD 8
2 DSTR 6
3 DTR 20
4 GRD 7
5 RD 3
6 TD 2
7 CTS 5
8 RS 4

Sincerely,
Dmitri Abaimov, RCDD
