Dear euan,

Normally a monitor output on a laptop (you didn't mention a brand or model) would be a DB15 connector and be clearly marked with a picture of a monitor or marked VGA.

Generally this is the connection used to connect to a projector or other external monitor device.

I have no idea what a vgout connector is on your laptop. If you write back with more specifics I can try and help you further

Sincerely,
Joseph Golan, RCDD
