How many wires out of the 8 are needed for network interface? I have been told that only 4 are needed 1,2 3 and 7.

Dear Chris,

That all depends on the type of network. For 1000BaseT you need all 4 pairs, but for 10 BaseT and 100BaseT it is 2 pairs 1 & 2, 3 & 6.

BTW they must be twisted pairs, never think of them as individual wires.
