 Extend a Demarc
Hi Telco delivered our T1 to a smart jack in the basement. Now I need to get it to the 10th floor in our server room. I know the building has some punch down blocks on several floors. How can I do this?

Dear Chris,

You need to plug in a modular cord into the smart jack and then break out the two pairs for the T-1.

If you are using existing voice riser to get this to the 10th floor, each pair of the T-1 circuit sould be sent up in separate binder groups to prevent cross talk between the transmit and receive pairs.
BTW a binder group is typically 25 pairs.

If you do not have two separate binder groups, then I would suggest using a 2-pair, 22AWG shielded ABAM cable to extend the circuit.

At the server room end you will need to convert the pairs back to a modular plug in order to connect to your equipment.

Depending on the length of the cable, the attenuation pads may need some adjustment.

Sincerely,
Joseph Golan, RCDD
